Gauteng Sport Awards Aims To Inspire The Next Generation

Gauteng public, sports fraternity including clubs have an opportunity to nominate their sport stars for the 2018 Gauteng Sport Awards. This comes as the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation launched the 7th annual Gauteng Sport Awards in Johannesburg on Thursday, 07 June. The awards are aimed at honouring achievements of the province’s sporting heroes and heroines and paying tribute to their excellence on and off the field over the past year.

Launched under the theme ‘Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring the Youth’, this year’s Gauteng Sport Awards will take place at Silverstar Casino on 2 September 2018. Nominations are now open starting 7 June 2018 and closing on 7 July 2018.

A total of 19 categories have been outlined, with the most prestigious being the Sport Personality of The Year, the Sport Fan of the Year and the Sport Programme (broadcast) of the Year. Each of these categories will be decided by public SMS vote.

“Gauteng has once again proved to be the home of the champions and the preferred destination for competitive sporting events, investment, tourism and business” says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Faith Mazibuko.”  “In doing so and by using sport as a mechanism for development, Gauteng continues to be the hub of growth and sustainability” she continues.

Not only have has the Gauteng Sport Awards rewarded athletes, players and administrators for their efforts in the world of sport but continues to unearth raw talent and endeavors to nurture and develop these talents with the aim of becoming giants in their disciplines.

The Gauteng Sports Awards are truly unique in the way the public is incorporated and brought into the process of deciding the worthy winners. Residents of Gauteng have a proud history of supporting their heroes and rooting for their teams.

This spirit of passionate support by the province continues to inspire MEC Faith Mazibuko and her department to strive for excellence, with particular emphasis on the youth, who need the support of the entire province to ensure they reach for the stars.

This year the stakes are higher than ever. An adjudication panel, consisting of media, sport experts, government officials and other key stakeholders will narrow public nominations down to three finalists per category, before an eventual winner is chosen.

Each finalist will receive R7,500 – up from R5,000 last year – with the winner per category walking away with an impressive R15,000.

Meanwhile, the Sports Personality of the Year winner will walk away with a whopping R50,000, while the Lifetime Achiever Award will see the winner earn R50,000 for his/her efforts in the world of sport.

The Gauteng Sport Awards promises to be a night of the stars as the Gauteng sports world come together for a night of celebration, excitement and recognition.
