Straight out of Katlehong roars vocalist Lioness (real name Mamphore Mohoje-Rabanka). The talented newcomer stakes her claim in the local music industry, teaming up with prolific DJ and producer Mobi Dixon to create Ba dumetse, a vibey club banger.
Her 11 year journey punctuated with false starts, broken promises and doors shut in her face finally culminates with a hit that will put her where she belongs – on the top of the charts.
‘I’m very excited I feel blessed. It’s been a long journey with promises that never got to fruition. I now look ahead to the next chapter with excitement,’ she reflects.
Lioness worked as a news compiler and announcer on Kasie FM and Jozi FM but she still couldn’t get her foot into the music space having to fend off unsolicited advances, but that’s all in the past now as the Afroblues supernova charges ahead.
Lioness who describes herself as an African first, who happens to be Mosotho is about soul, the truth, feeling and hope and that permeates all her music.
Touting Ba dumetse, Lioness shares that it’s a song of celebration. ‘Now that the doors are open I delight in how it all turned out. Music has played an important role in my life and I hope that other people relate to the song as we all celebrate our life journeys and give thanks to the Creator and ancestors.’
She is inspired to achieve more and has nothing but praise for Mobi Dixon. ‘He knows his story and is a professional. We come from different worlds in terms of our sound, but he listened to me and we blend together. He’s a beautiful person to work with.’
Mobi Dixon reciprocates: ‘Lioness is a talented vocalist and I’m proud of Ba dumetse. She is going far and I believe there is more to come from her.’
