The Department of Sport and Recreation opened the nominations for the 14th edition of the annual South African Sport Awards on the 1st of September 2019 and they closed on the 30 of September 2019.
SA Sport Awards initiative falls under The Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa’s recognition of excellence programme which this time around sit under the Winning Nation Unit. This programme annually recognises outstanding achievement by various sports men and women who continue to produce outstanding excellent performance. This platform further grants those who continue to excel an opportunity to be rewarded for their performance taking into account the role they continue to play by being good ambassadors for the country on and off the field.
This year’s edition of the SA Sport Awards is geared towards recognising the ways in which sport has boosted social cohesion and nation building in the democratic South Africa focusing also on the human triumphing spirit. The nominees this time around over and above their contribution to sporting excellence will equally be honoured for their contribution despite various adversities. This 14th Edition of the Sports Awards coincides with the celebration of 25 years of democracy focusing on #izinjaZeGame and their spirit of triumph.
The announcement of nominees for the 14th Edition of the Sport Awards is set for Friday, 11 October 2019 and as always, the department is certain that the awards categories will continue to bring excitement taking into account as well the wildly inclusive category of ‘People’s Choice Sports Star of the Year’ for 2019. This category will continue to give the public an opportunity to determine who will walk with this ultimate award.
Sports enthusiasts will be pleased to know that they can still look forward to seeing who will scoop the journalists adjudicated award of the Sport Star of the year. Last year’s Awards was given to Caster Semenya who equally walked away with the People’s Choice category award. The voted upon people’s choice award went on to amassing the highest number of public votes giving once more Caster Semenya the category of People’s Choice Sports Star of the Year Award.
The Sport Awards will continue to also honour the importance of members of the media by granting them an opportunity to be nominated in the Sport Journalist of the year category.
