The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) fully supports the Swiss Supreme Federal Court decision to suspend the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) regulations and testosterone rules in female athletes which have adversely affected Caster Semenya’s ability to run.
The Swiss court on Monday ordered the IAAF to suspend immediately the implementation of the regulation with regard to Caster and has given the IAAF until the 25th of June to respond to this suspensation. Meanwhile Caster can compete without restriction in the female category while her appeal is pending.
As a macro sports body of South Africa, this ruling represents a huge positive stride for Caster and many women around the world who are discriminated. We are elated that sense, logic, protection of human rights of athletes and science have all prevailed. We hope that when this case is concluded these regulations will be applied with impartiality, parity and fairness. We do believe that this decision will expedite the talent of athletes here in South Africa and globally.
